Regenerative Capitalism Org Expands to Build Network of Regenerative Economies

November 13, 2017 By 3BLmedia

Dr. Stuart Cowan joins the regenerative economic collaborative to build global network of regenerative hubs

GREENWICH, Conn., November 10, 2017 /3BL Media/ – Capital Institute, a non-partisan collaborative dedicated to supporting the necessary transition toward a more just and regenerative economic system, is proud to welcome Dr. Stuart Cowan as the organization’s Director of Regenerative Development.

Bringing more than 20 years of experience in the application of systems science and regenerative design to sustainable economic and community development, Stuart will join the senior management team and lead Capital Institute’s efforts to grow an international network of place-based regenerative community hubs. Hubs will receive support to nurture a launch team, tell their stories and share their lessons, map their regenerative assets, measure key indicators, create an action plan, implement key regenerative projects, and access regenerative investment capital.

“Stuart has been a mentor and friend to the Capital Institute for years, and part of our research alliance.  It is an absolute privilege to now have the opportunity to work with him as a partner in our organization,” said John Fullerton, founder and president of Capital Institute, and architect of the regenerative capitalism framework. “Stuart’s recent experience working with cities, his practical regenerative development background, his broad reaching intellect, and his remarkable humanity, will transform our efforts to make a dent in the world.”

Stuart comes to Capital Institute from Smart Cities Council, where, as Chief Scientist, he worked to develop knowledge frameworks and tools supporting the integration of smart technologies with urban sustainability and resilience. Stuart is also the co-founder of Autopiesis LLC, a Portland, Ore.-based company that applies complex living systems models and frameworks to enhance the resilience of communities and organizations.

“I am delighted to be joining one of the world’s leading organizations dedicated to regenerative economics,” said Dr. Cowan. “After working with cities internationally to address sustainability and resilience with enhanced data, it is clear to me that the Capital Institute’s bold efforts to catalyze regenerative communities are timely and essential.”

A Portland, Ore. resident, he received his doctorate in complex systems from University of California at Berkeley. He is the co-author of Ecological Design, a visionary overview of the whole systems integration of ecology and architecture, land-use planning, and product design and has taught design and systems thinking at several universities.

Based on the patterns and principles of nature that dictate systemic health, regenerative economies harness the self-organizing and self-nurturing capacities of communities. Regenerative economies support the long-term well-being of people and the planet by systematically investing in the very roots of whole systems health.
